The Iepen Fryske Kampioenskippen Skutsjesilen (IFKS) championship started on August 1, 2026, in Hindeloopen. More than 60 traditional skutsje vessels are taking part in the multi-stage competition.
The event runs through August 8, with races scheduled at various Frisian locations.
After Hindeloopen and Stavoren, the fleet moves to Heeg, Sloten, and Echtenerbrug, concluding on the IJsselmeer at Lemmer.
A rest day is planned for August 5.
Local Crews and Their Preparations
The Eastermar team, sailing De Broekophalder in the A-kleinklasse, starts its races daily at 12:45 p. m.
To prepare, the crew released a custom team beer and an official skutsje song titled 'Sile Mei Elkoar' by artists SOUW and Theunis Lourens.
Mike Okkema, a crew member, said they practiced at the Feanhoop Festival and went to Albufeira.
He added that being together and enjoying the sociable atmosphere is a big goal.
The Eastermar team originated as a group of friends. They aim to improve after finishing mid-table in previous seasons due to poor starts and collisions.
Okkema noted they know they can do better and hope to succeed this year.
Eelke Hoekstra, a board member, expressed confidence in the fleet's readiness. He said the men and the skutsje are ready for a beautiful start on Saturday afternoon.
In the A-klasse, the Koudum entry Grytsje Obes, skippered by Arjen de Jong, returns after staying in the top division since 2019.
Koudum is also represented in the C-klasse by Ierdswel, skippered by Sybren Gosse van der Velde, which finished sixth overall in 2025 after maintenance at Workumer Jachtservice.
Song and Community Spirit
The song for De Broekophalder was created to foster community spirit. Sjoukje, initiator and singer, said they wanted their own skutsje song because not many have one.
It brings connection and community, which they stand for.
The songwriters gathered cultural themes during writing sessions. They wrote down everything related to skutsjesilen, including the culture and the feeling it evokes.
Sjoukje said initial feedback from villagers has been positive, with many praising the song.
She added that the song's themes reflect the crew's collaborative identity, emphasizing that they are strong together as a group.
Broadcast and Media Coverage
IFKS TV is streaming live races on YouTube using a floating studio converted from the sand vessel De Sjoerd.
Lead director Ramiro Gras oversees a 25-person crew with eight cameras and a drone covering all four classes.
Regional broadcaster Omrop Fryslan is producing a four-part vlog series titled 'Trossen Los' presented by Laura Oosterloo and Gerard Kets.
Oosterloo said they will make four vlogs with a new challenge in each video, aiming to capture the IFKS culture and show it to the people.
The reporters plan to engage with the public and shadow the organization for a day. Oosterloo noted that the audience is their director.
Kets, a rookie to the sport, said he was scared by the starting gun and will learn as much as possible about the IFKS in a few days.
The vlog series concept came after Oosterloo's positive experience covering the event last year.
She spent a week on a skutsje and fell in love with the sport and atmosphere.
The four episodes will be available on the Omrop Fryslan YouTube channel starting Monday at 7:00 p.
