Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have adopted a rescue puppy named Javi after meeting him during a dog adoption segment on their morning show, Live with Kelly and Mark.
The couple announced the adoption on October 13 and are waiting for the puppy to complete medical checks before bringing him into their New York City home.
According to the show, Javi was originally named Lucas and came from Pet ResQ Inc., a New Jersey-based rescue organization.
Ripa and Consuelos also have three adult children, Michael, 29, Lola, 25, and Joaquin, 23, and another dog named Lena.
The couple introduced the puppy during an Adopt a Dog Week segment on the October 12 episode.
Ripa described how meeting Lucas revealed a softer side of her husband.
"Listen, Mark walked into my dressing room this morning with Lucas in his arms," Ripa said.
She followed with her observation about Consuelos's reaction to the puppy.
"And I saw a different you. I saw a kinder, gentler you."
Before making the adoption official, the couple wanted to ensure the new puppy would get along with Lena.
During the program, they joked about conducting a compatibility check before taking Javi home.
On October 13, Ripa told viewers that the adoption had been finalized, although Javi still needed to complete medical checks before joining the household.
"We have a new baby. Not living in the house yet.
Gotta wait for a couple of medicals, a couple of tests, but we are like expectant parents," Ripa said.
She also described how preparing for the puppy had already affected her routine at home.
"Like, I started nesting last night. I couldn't sleep.
I started making a nest."
Javi's arrival carries emotional significance for Ripa, who connected the puppy with Chewie, the family's Shih Tzu that died in February 2025.
She explained that the resemblance brought memories of her former pet to mind.
"I kept thinking about how much Javi reminded me of Chewie," Ripa said.
She shared her personal belief that the new dog had come into their lives at a meaningful time.
"Oh, I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us."
Ripa also spoke about the lasting grief she continues to feel following Chewie's death.
"My beloved dog, who I will never get over and mourn for the rest of my life, sent this little dog here," she said.
The puppy is expected to join the family at their Upper East Side townhouse, a 7,796-square-foot residence valued at $27 million, according to Realtor.
com.
The couple purchased the property in 2013 and have since furnished it with a blend of art deco and modern design.
In a 2024 home tour for Architectural Digest, Ripa recalled her immediate reaction when she first visited the property.
"I was like, 'It's perfect, just hand me my toothbrush,'" she said.
Ripa explained that the townhouse had become the family's long-term home despite several moves throughout their lives.
"We've moved several times in our lives, but no matter where we go, for me, this is my forever home.
When I walked in here, I was like, 'This is the final place where I will live.' I love this house so much."
The home's interior includes vintage furniture, custom-designed storage solutions, and artwork with personal significance.
Ripa has also described the bedroom as inspired by European hotels, with furnishings sourced from flea markets in Paris.
During the same home tour, she joked about her attachment to the property.
"I don't want to sound morbid, but they'll have to carry me out of here feet first because I have gotten good and comfortable in this house," Ripa said.
Before Javi can move in permanently, the remaining medical checks must be completed, and the couple will need to allow time for the puppy and Lena to become accustomed to living together.
