San Francisco opened wide receiver Christian Kirk's 21-day practice window on October 15, promoted defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo to the active roster, and signed linebacker Eugene Asante to the practice squad.
The moves address two thin position groups as injuries continue to hit the roster.
Kirk has been on injured reserve all season and can now work toward a return after missing roughly three and a half months.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Kirk's return took longer because the veteran had setbacks after suffering the injury early in training camp.
Thursday was set to be Kirk's first official day back at practice, according to Niners Nation.
The team has two games before its bye, giving San Francisco flexibility as Kirk works back into football condition.
Roster Moves and Injury Updates
Okoronkwo has appeared in 86 NFL games with 14 starts, recording 129 tackles and 18.0 sacks across eight seasons.
He has played in five games for San Francisco in 2026 and has 2 tackles and 1.0 sack.
Asante joins the practice squad after previous stops with Miami, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Arizona.
Arizona released him on October 13, and the 49ers could elevate him for Monday night with Dre Greenlaw suspended and Garret Wallow managing a hamstring injury.
San Francisco's receiver depth has become a pressing issue.
Mike Evans is the only wide receiver with significant playing time this season who is still available, while Deebo Samuel is expected to miss Monday's game against Washington.
Demarcus Robinson, De'Zhaun Stribling, and Ricky Pearsall remain on injured reserve.
Shanahan also provided updates on several other injured players.
Evans is dealing with Achilles soreness, while Nick Bosa was not expected to practice Thursday as the team monitored his status for Monday night.
Shanahan said linebacker Nick Martin would not return this week despite injuries at the position.
The 49ers are also weighing whether Samuel needs injured reserve.
Shanahan indicated the upcoming bye week is affecting that decision, while Robinson appears closer to a return than Stribling.
On Robinson, Shanahan suggested a return before the bye remains possible, though the more likely outcome is a comeback after the break.
Shanahan also said Stribling is still some time away but remains on track.
