A sequel to Netflix’s animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters is currently in development, according to songwriter Mark Sonnenblick, who says early work on the follow-up project is already underway.
Sonnenblick, who co-wrote the film’s breakout song Golden with vocalist Ejae, has had a landmark year in 2026. He has secured a Golden Globe and a Grammy for the track, alongside an Academy Award nomination.
The rapid success has sparked discussions about continuing the story of K-Pop Demon Hunters, which became Netflix’s most-watched film following its release.
“There’s going to be a whole development process before we get deep into writing the songs,” Sonnenblick said, explaining that music for a sequel would be shaped by the narrative rather than commercial pressure.
He added that any return to the franchise would depend on whether the creative team felt it made sense to reunite.
The songwriter described the past year as overwhelming, saying the film’s reception propelled everyone involved “from zero to a million” in a short period of time.
Sonnenblick spoke shortly after learning that Golden had been shortlisted for an Oscar, calling the moment emotional and crediting fans for driving the song’s momentum.
“This song could have disappeared,” he said. “The only reason this nomination happened is fans responded and told other people to watch the film.”
Golden emerged as one of the most successful songs of 2025 and is now a contender for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards on March 15.
Alongside potential sequel work, Sonnenblick is preparing for the London debut of his new stage musical Midnight at the Never Get, which will open at the Menier Chocolate Factory in July.
The production stars Ben Platt and is set in a 1960s New York underground gay bar, exploring the relationship between a singer and a songwriter.
Platt said he was surprised by the depth of Sonnenblick’s writing, noting that the score and characters exceeded his expectations.
The musical marks Sonnenblick’s next major project following his earlier success collaborating with Elton John on The Devil Wears Prada.
Midnight at the Never Get will run in London from July through September 2026, as Sonnenblick balances new theatrical work with the growing legacy of K-Pop Demon Hunters.
