Colorado Avalanche star forward Nathan MacKinnon exited Game 3 of the Western Conference Final against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday after blocking a shot in the second period.

The incident occurred while MacKinnon was in the defensive zone, where he blocked a slapshot from the blue line taken by Vegas defenseman Shea Theodore.

The puck struck the right side of MacKinnon's knee, leaving him on the ice in visible pain.

He was helped up by teammates and limped to the bench under his own power.

The 30-year-old forward attempted to remain in the matchup and took another shift, but he was unable to put weight on his injured leg.

He left for the locker room before the second period concluded.

MacKinnon did not return to the bench for the start of the third period, leaving the Avalanche without their top producer while tied 3-3 in Game 3 and trailing 2-0 in the series.

Impact on Avalanche Lineup

MacKinnon completed the regular season with 127 points, recording 53 goals and 74 assists across 80 games. He has contributed 14 points in 11 postseason appearances.

The loss of the star forward forces lineup adjustments for head coach Jared Bednar, with Czech forward Martin Necas expected to assume a heavier offensive role.

Colorado is already managing a day-to-day injury status for defenseman Cale Makar.

The opposing Golden Knights continue to lean on postseason production from Jack Eichel and Pavel Dorofeyev.
