Netflix premiered a new eight-episode series adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved "Little House on the Prairie" books on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The rebooted drama focuses on the pioneering Ingalls family as they migrate across the American West during the late 1800s.

Developed by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content, the production features an expanded narrative that incorporates historical complexities, including gender inequality, racial diversity, and the realities of Indigenous populations on the frontier.
Showrunner Defends Creative Choices
Showrunner, writer, and producer Rebecca Sonnenshine addressed pre-release concerns regarding the modernized tone and creative adjustments of the adaptation.
She emphasized that the project remains faithful to the core elements of the original literary source material.
"Whatever anyone's definition of 'woke' is," said Sonnenshine, "and I think it has lost all definition, when she watches it, she will understand that it is very much in keeping with the spirit of the books."
Sonnenshine also defended specific casting and production choices, such as the appearance of the character Mary Ingalls and the selection of the family dog, citing practical television training requirements and acting talent.
"She was the best actress and I'm not going to dye a kid's hair," said Sonnenshine.
"Brindle bulldogs are very stubborn and untrainable for TV. We chose a border collie/cattle dog mix," she added.
The showrunner noted that geographical distances were slightly altered for television narrative purposes compared to the books.
"They lived much closer [than depicted in the novel], we moved them a bit closer still," said Sonnenshine.
