Federal officials have joined the investigation into the death of 18-year-old college freshman Nolan Xavier Wells, whose body was discovered on Horn Island on July 6 after a holiday boat trip with friends.
The Ocean Springs native traveled to the undeveloped barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf coast on July 4 with about 300 young adults for a gathering before the academic term.

While his friends, phone, and keys returned that day, Wells remained missing until search teams found his body two days later.
The incident has sparked widespread speculation on social media. The family held a press conference in New York with civil rights attorneys to address the case.
“Me and his dad had conversations with him all the time, not just about the importance of understanding our history as Black people, but also the importance of how you have to move in certain spaces,” said Christine Wonsley, Wells’s mother.
Legal representatives have raised questions about the demographics of the group and the initial handling by local law enforcement.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously stated no foul play was suspected before the autopsy was completed.
“We are in Mississippi. These were three young white men.
Nolan was the only young Black man.
Had the roles been reversed, we know this investigation would be going differently,” said Ben Crump, attorney for the family.
Contradicting accounts have emerged about Wells’s final movements.
