Volkswagen has partnered with premium e-bike specialist n+ to launch a new range of licensed electric bicycles packed with technology typically found in cars.
Instead of focusing on battery size or power, the emphasis is on rider awareness and safety.
Smart View System
The headline feature is called Smart View. It combines a rear-facing camera with radar sensors to monitor approaching traffic.
A handlebar display lets riders see what's behind them without turning their heads, while radar alerts warn when vehicles are approaching from the rear.
This technology is borrowed from automotive visibility systems, adapted for e-bikes in crowded urban environments.
Automotive Lighting for Bikes
The e-bike also features a full-length LED strip integrated into the frame that serves as a daytime running light.
When braking, the light glows red; when turning, it flashes amber to indicate direction.
This gives other road users clearer visual cues about the cyclist's intentions.
Connected Helmet and Smart Glasses
A connected helmet synchronizes with the bike's lighting system and includes its own illuminated elements.
It also has crash detection technology that can notify emergency contacts if an accident occurs.
Smart glasses work alongside the bike's camera and radar, projecting navigation instructions, traffic alerts, and ride information into the rider's field of view.
The glasses were reportedly developed by engineers with experience creating helmet-mounted displays for military pilots.
While some cyclists may prefer a simpler setup, the added safety features could be beneficial for urban riding.
