Alison Hammond has returned to ITV's This Morning after a health scare that occurred during a live broadcast.

The presenter was taken to hospital after experiencing heavy breathing and chest pains while on air with co-host Dermot O'Leary.

She later said checks on her heart, lungs and blood tests were clear.

Hammond addressed viewers during her return alongside O'Leary, describing the incident as a frightening experience that happened live on television.

"It was the scariest thing that I have ever been through, it was surreal," she said.

"I felt like I'd gone into the upside down world, I couldn't grasp my breath and it was a panic attack."

She added that it was the first time she had experienced anything like that and that it happened live on TV.

"I thought OMG my son might be watching so I just ran off. I genuinely thought I was having a heart attack," Hammond said.

Before returning to the studio, Hammond had updated followers from home after leaving hospital.

She said she needed to learn more about panic attacks following the incident.

"I'm home, I'm safe and I'm feeling so much better," she said.

"Thanks to everyone at the NHS who did the checks on my heart, lungs, bloods. I'm all okay.

It's all clear."

"Which would mean I had a massive panic attack on live TV. I mean, the shame of it," Hammond said.

"But it felt very real to me. I'm really new to panic attacks, so I need to learn more about it."

Hammond also thanked those who supported her after the broadcast, including colleagues at This Morning and O'Leary.

"I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone at This Morning who looked after me.

All of your messages. Dermot, who's just been incredible," she said.

"Honestly, it's really warmed my heart.

I didn't necessarily want to be on the news or anything like that but this is a new world to me."

"I'm going to take stock, get some rest and I'll see you soon," Hammond said.

Hammond also missed the Attitude Awards after the incident, where she received The Honorary Gay Award at London's Roundhouse.

Her Big Brother friend Kate Lawler accepted the award on her behalf.

"I've spoken to Alison since and it was one of the scariest things she has gone through.

She didn't think she was having a panic attack, she thought she was having a f---ing heart attack," Lawler said.
