Northampton Town earned their first away victory of the season by defeating Grimsby Town 2-0 at Blundell Park, a result that lifted the visitors out of the League Two relegation zone.
Matty Warhurst and captain Jon Guthrie supplied the goals, while Grimsby were left to rue missed chances and a late sending-off.
Northampton started the match in 22nd place on 10 points, with Grimsby sitting 15th on 13 points, according to the Sky Sports match report.
The visitors threatened early when Connor Lemonheigh-Evans headed Lee Evans' free kick toward goal, only for the effort to be cleared off the line.
Owen Dale then saw a follow-up attempt diverted wide after a scramble inside the six-yard box.
Warhurst and Guthrie Seal the Points
Warhurst broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, striking right-footed from the left channel into the far bottom corner after two earlier attempts had been saved by Christy Pym.
At the other end, Zach Jeacock protected Northampton's lead with important saves to deny Iwan Morgan, Justin Amaluzor and Kieran Green before the break.
Grimsby pushed for an equalizer after halftime, with Jamie Walker hitting the upright and Charles Vernam sending an effort over the crossbar from close range.
Northampton doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Guthrie, the captain, found the net to put the visitors two goals clear.
Grimsby's task grew harder three minutes later when Edon Pruti was sent off in the 61st minute.
According to Sky Sports, the defender suffered a serious injury in the incident and left the field on a stretcher, leaving his team to play on with 10 men.
David Artell set Grimsby up in a 4-1-4-1 formation with Green as captain and Morgan leading the attack, while Chris Hogg paired Warhurst with Dale up front in a 4-4-2 for Northampton.
Grimsby made several changes as the game wore on, including replacing defender Daniel Tharme in the 49th minute and introducing fresh attacking options later.
Northampton responded with substitutions of their own, bringing on Ethan List, Sam Hoskins and Jordan Maxwell to hold their advantage.
The win ended Northampton's wait for an away victory this season and moved the club out of the relegation places, where the bottom two teams in League Two face relegation according to BBC Sport standings information.
