The Chicago Bears moved to 5-2 with a 30-24 win over the New England Patriots, sealed by Cairo Santos' career-long 58-yard field goal and a late onside kick recovery by Rome Odunze.

New England dropped to 4-3 after a back-and-forth contest that saw Caleb Williams and Drake Maye both pass for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns.

Santos converted the decisive kick in the closing minutes, having missed a 53-yard attempt off the right upright earlier in the fourth quarter.

The long field goal gave Chicago a two-possession cushion and validated head coach Ben Johnson's call to attempt the difficult kick.

Andy Borregales answered with a field goal to keep New England within reach, but the Patriots' onside kick attempt failed when Odunze recovered the ball.

How the Bears built and protected their lead

Chicago opened with a 10-0 first-quarter lead after D'Andre Swift scored a touchdown, before Maye's offense pulled New England back into the game.

With three seconds left in the first half, Williams found Luther Burden III for a 24-yard touchdown to make it 20-7.

The Patriots responded immediately through an unusual 48-yard touchdown from Rhamondre Stevenson, who found space on the right side and evaded defenders to cut the deficit to 20-14 at halftime.

Chicago began the second half with another touchdown drive, capped by Williams connecting with tight end Colston Loveland in the end zone.

Maye then threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Eli Raridon to keep New England close.

Santos' missed 53-yard attempt left the Bears with a 27-21 lead, and Chicago's offense was forced into a three-and-out earlier in the game before regaining momentum on its final drive.

Odunze recorded three catches of 21 yards in the fourth quarter, two of which sustained the decisive possession that set up Santos' successful kick.

Williams completed 22 of 33 passes, while Maye finished 24 of 31, keeping the matchup tight until Chicago's late execution proved decisive.

The Bears' pass rush also forced a three-and-out from New England in the fourth quarter.

Chicago tight end Cole Kmet was carted off after appearing to injure his right knee during a tackle by two Patriots players, giving the crowd a thumbs-up on his way to the locker room.

Rookie defensive back Malik Muhammad was ruled doubtful to return with a toe injury.
