China's monthly car exports exceeded 1 million units for the first time in June 2026, according to Chinese customs data.

The milestone was driven by a 27% increase in overall overseas shipments.

The surge contributes to China's trajectory to match or surpass last year's record trade surplus of $1 trillion.

Exports to the EU rose by 12.7% year on year, resulting in a surplus of 1.225 trillion yuan (£135 billion).

Exports Beat Forecasts

Rafael Jimenez Buendía, a trade expert from the Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics), said the export boost surpassed forecasts.

"We expected China's exports to the EU to reach a new first-half record of 2.12 trillion yuan, but the released data exceeded this by 45 billion yuan, reaching 2.165 trillion yuan," Buendía noted.

The increase in electric and hybrid vehicle exports has intensified pressure on the European automotive industry, which faces potential job losses.

Volkswagen, Europe's largest car manufacturer, is contemplating a workforce reduction of up to 100,000 as part of a major restructuring effort.

China's export growth is also fueled by rising orders for semiconductors amid a global AI boom. Exports of integrated circuits reached 32 billion units.

Analysts express concerns about the impact of this export surge, drawing parallels to past trade dynamics. The development risks new tensions with the US and EU.
