Netflix is set to release Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald on Friday, October 16, 2026. The feature-length documentary explores the life and career of the late comedian.

Directed and produced by Judd Apatow, the film uses archival footage, personal photographs, and rare home videos.

It traces Macdonald's rise to fame and his lasting influence on comedy.

The documentary runs approximately 2 hours and 6 minutes and is available exclusively on Netflix.

It is a standalone feature, not a television series, with Macdonald himself serving as narrator through material recorded during his lifetime.

The film follows Macdonald's career from his work as the deadpan anchor of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live to his reputation among fellow comedians.

Netflix describes it as a portrait of a performer whose life combined uncompromising principles with contradictions.

Apatow explained the documentary's approach during a Netflix preview event, emphasizing the use of Macdonald's own words and creative work.

"let Norm tell you who he was by what he left behind," said Judd Apatow, the film's director and producer.

The production draws on Macdonald's book, sketches, stand-up performances, and interviews.

Rather than relying on newly recorded interviews, it assembles existing material to document his personality, experiences, and professional legacy.

Archival appearances include Adam Sandler, David Spade, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jim Carrey, Sarah Silverman, Harland Williams, and Jane Fonda, according to the film's listings.

Netflix has rated the documentary R.

The release coincides with Netflix's October 2026 series of comedy documentaries, with one film scheduled each week. Who Is Martin Mull?

debuted on October 7, followed by the Macdonald documentary on October 16.

The remaining titles in the monthly lineup are Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story, scheduled for October 23, and SCTV: The Greatest Show You've Never Heard Of, scheduled for October 30.

Apatow also co-directed the Maria Bamford documentary, while Netflix has added older seasons of SCTV to its library ahead of the latter film's release.

Alongside the documentary, Netflix Music is releasing a digital soundtrack featuring original music composed by Emmy Award nominee Jeff Morrow.

His previous credits include Snow White, A Christmas Story Christmas, The Snoopy Show, George Carlin's American Dream, and Olaf's Frozen Adventure.

The soundtrack is scheduled for digital release on October 16, the same day the documentary premieres.

Its listed tracks include Stand Up Comedy, Upbringing, Before I Was Famous, Norm Podcast, News Brothers, Fearing Death, Escaping Reality, Ohlmeyer Hates Norm, The Norm Show, Gaining Weight, Richard Farnsworth, Netflix Interview, and Norm's Mom.

Macdonald died in 2021, but his recorded performances and personal materials form the foundation of the film.

The documentary presents his story through footage and recordings preserved by the comedian, his friends, and his fans.
