Photographer Michael Donald spent four years traveling to 13 countries to interview and photograph every living World Cup final goalscorer.
The project, funded by a film producer, included a documentary crew.

Jairzinho Portrait in Manguinhos
One of the subjects was Jair Ventura Filho, known as Jairzinho, who scored Brazil's third goal in the 1970 World Cup final against Italy.
The portrait session took place in the Manguinhos neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, where Jairzinho runs a football school for children from local shantytowns.
Operating inside the favela required following strict unwritten rules. Outsiders had to leave by 5:00 PM because police have no jurisdiction there.
The production team hired security from local drug lords, but the young guards abandoned their posts by mid-afternoon, leaving the crew vulnerable.

Donald noticed an old football table outside a bar near the public pitch and asked for 10 more minutes to capture one final sequence with Jairzinho.
While he focused on the shoot using a tripod-mounted Hasselblad camera, an unidentified man on a bicycle approached the crew.
An argument broke out behind the camera between the local man and the crew.
The director, Dan, alerted Donald to the escalating danger as the man drew a firearm on the production staff.

Jairzinho remained calm during the confrontation, allowing Donald to secure the final frame. The crew quickly packed their equipment and left the area.
