Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder questioned the quality of refereeing in the Championship after his side lost 3-2 to Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after the match, Wilder expressed frustration with several decisions and called for emerging referees to be given opportunities in the second tier.

He also defended his team's performance, pointing to their attacking threat and determination despite the defeat.

Wilder Targets Officiating Standards

The manager focused on the standard of officiating when explaining his frustration with the result.

"There were a number of decisions that incredibly frustrated me," Wilder said.

He then questioned whether younger officials were being given sufficient opportunities to referee Championship matches, arguing that the competition needed stronger standards.

"I just think where are the young up and coming referees that should be refereeing in the Championship instead of the ones that just survive," Wilder said.

"They keep surviving and no doubt we'll have another survivor on Saturday, where's the quality?"

His remarks raised concerns about the consistency and quality of officiating, with the manager directing his criticism toward the selection of referees for matches at Championship level.

Wilder also said Sheffield United believed the decisions had gone against them during the match.

However, he maintained that his players had created a threat, pointing to their recent long-range scoring record as evidence of their attacking capability.

"We feel a bit hard done by tonight and we were a threat, three goals in the last three games come from 25 to 30 yards and there was nothing Michael could do," Wilder said.

Despite his disappointment with the result and the officiating, Wilder praised the team's response during the closing stages.

He emphasized the players' commitment to one another as they continued fighting until the final moments.

"The attitude of the team late on was so good and they fought for each other like mad, it's a tough one to take," Wilder said.

The defeat left Sheffield United reflecting on a match in which Wilder expressed dissatisfaction with key decisions while highlighting the collective effort of his squad.

His comments also pointed to the next scheduled fixture on Saturday, when he anticipated another refereeing appointment that he would scrutinize.
