Remsen fled but was caught crossing the border from Mexico into Texas.
During the 1982 trial, prosecutors argued Remsen planned the murder to access Gaston's fortune.
Remsen testified that Gaston died naturally and claimed he disposed of her body at sea to maintain the appearance she was alive, allowing him to liquidate her assets.
The remains were discovered by a wood gatherer in a severely decomposed state deep in the desert in late November 1981.
Forensic investigators could not identify the body for over 40 years.

The breakthrough came in May 2026, aided by a Missing and Unidentified Human Remains grant, allowing officials to formally conclude the identity.
