Hyundai's long-rumored mid-size pickup truck is expected to compete with the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, and it might not offer a conventional gasoline engine.
During Hyundai's Investor Day presentation, the company outlined plans for over 100 new or refreshed models by 2030, including a body-on-frame pickup set to launch within the next three years.
The new truck will target global rivals such as the Mitsubishi Triton and Isuzu D-Max, filling a 'white space' in Hyundai's lineup.
Hybrid or EREV Powertrain Likely
Hyundai Motor Company Australia's COO, Gavin Donaldson, acknowledged the brand's late entry into the segment and hinted at a hybrid or range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain.
"There's no doubt we'll be late to the party," Donaldson told Car Sales.
"When we do come to the party, we want to make sure everyone sees us when we walk through the door, and I think the powertrain will be the key."
Hyundai has confirmed several EREV models in development, including versions of the Santa Fe and Genesis, which could provide a basis for the pickup's electrified powertrain.
While speculation suggests the pickup might share its architecture with the Kia Tasman, Hyundai has not confirmed any platform details.
