Irish authorities are searching for a suspected asylum seeker who fled the country after an American woman was found suffocated in Killarney.

The body of 43-year-old Jamey Carney was discovered at her home on Tuesday morning. A pathologist confirmed she had been suffocated.

Carney lived in the residence with her 13-year-old daughter, Michaela Carney.

According to police reports, the unnamed suspect left Killarney by bus for Dublin shortly after the body was found.

He then boarded a flight to Istanbul, Turkey.

The suspect held "subsidiary protection" status, which allowed him to retain his passport and leave Ireland.

The New York Post reported that this designation acknowledges potential risks if he were returned to his home country.

International Investigation Underway

Investigators are collaborating with law enforcement in Turkey and France, where the suspect previously resided.

It remains unclear whether he stayed in Turkey or traveled further into the Middle East, potentially to Jordan.

Extradition efforts back to Ireland face legal hurdles.

Irish legislation specifies that suspects can only be extradited if prosecutors intend to formally charge them with an offense, not just for questioning.

The victim relocated from the outskirts of New York City to Killarney in May 2021.

Her mother and sister have arrived in Ireland to arrange a fundraising campaign for funeral expenses.

"Jamey was an insanely caring human being," said Devon Bennett, Carney's sister. Bennett added that her sister dedicated her energy to fighting for the rights of others.

Bennett noted that while they grew up in New York, Carney spent significant time in Bergen County, New Jersey.

"But their true home, where they both truly felt they belonged, was the beautiful town of Killarney," she said.
