The redeployment involves S-300 and S-400 missile systems, which were previously stationed at bases in the far north.

Arctic Sites Depleted
Significant reductions were observed at the Rogachevo air base on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. A long-standing missile base there lost most of its equipment.
Similar removals occurred in Severodvinsk, a White Sea hub for nuclear submarine construction. Roughly two dozen S-300 and S-400 systems vanished from dedicated facilities.
Open-source investigations estimate that about 60 percent of Russia's pre-2022 S-300 and S-400 assets have been relocated from their original northern positions.
New Deployment Patterns
While air defense coverage remains active around nuclear missile silos and strategic bomber bases, relocated units have emerged near civilian and industrial infrastructure.
These include the Saratov oil refinery and public parks in Moscow.

Defense experts highlight the operational pressures driving these moves.
Katarzyna Zysk, a professor at the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies, noted a growing mismatch between the targets Russia must protect and its available launchers, interceptors, and trained personnel.
Analysts view the redeployments as calculated tactical adjustments rather than a complete abandonment of northern airspace defense.
Zysk said the moves suggest Russia does not anticipate an imminent large-scale attack in the far north and judges it can reduce protection there without unacceptable risk.
The shifting deployment pattern underscores how ongoing conflict conditions force adaptation against drone saturation tactics across different regions.
