Burnham returned to parliament just one month ago through a byelection organized by allies to replace Starmer, who lost the backing of numerous Labour lawmakers and ministers following several political errors and policy reversals.

Burnham secured the prime minister post without a leadership contest or extensive scrutiny because no other candidates within the party ran against him.
A similar situation occurred with Rishi Sunak in 2022, though Sunak had competed against Liz Truss weeks prior and possessed recent cabinet experience.
The former Greater Manchester mayor previously served as a member of parliament and a cabinet minister before leaving parliament in 2017 to assume the regional mayoral role.
