Arvid de Kleijn has withdrawn from the Tour de France during the sixth stage on Thursday.

The Tudor Pro Cycling rider abandoned the race after covering just over 50 kilometers.

The Dutch sprinter had faced severe difficulties in the preceding days.

During Wednesday's stage to Pau, he was the only sprinter dropped on the Côte de Baleix climb, finishing last among 181 riders and trailing 11 minutes behind stage winner Olav Kooij.

Despite his struggles, the 32-year-old started the first major mountain stage toward Gavarnie-Gèdre.

However, he fell behind the peloton on an early fourth-category climb and decided to exit before reaching the Col d'Aspin.

De Kleijn was not originally scheduled to participate in the three-week event.

He received a late call-up to make his debut as a replacement for injured compatriot Maikel Zijlaard.

According to race records, De Kleijn is the fifth rider to abandon this year's Tour de France.

Fellow Dutchman Alex Molenaar also did not start Thursday's stage after a severe crash during the previous stage, joining Arnaud De Lie, Kelland O’Brien, and Clément Berthet as early departures.
