Charity Dingle has been released from prison after the case against her weakened, but her return to Emmerdale has not repaired her relationship with Sarah Sugden.
Sarah refused to rebuild their bond, while Thea Ramsden demanded a future favor from Sarah over the altered evidence that helped secure Charity's release.
Charity's Release and Sarah's Refusal
According to Digital Spy, Charity learned she could return home after Mackenzie Boyd explained that there was insufficient evidence and pressure had been applied in the right places.
Her family welcomed her back, but Sarah remained unwilling to reconcile.
Radio Times reported that Charity had been imprisoned over the death of Dr Caitlin Todd, although she did not commit the killing.
Sarah had initially blamed Charity after learning the truth about Leyla's parentage, while Charity had previously protected Sarah from prosecution.
When Charity and Sarah spoke privately, Sarah apologized for the ordeal but said their relationship could not return to its previous state.
"Look, I'm glad you're out and I'm sorry for what I put you through, I can see that it must have been awful.
That doesn't mean we can go back to how we were before. There is no making up.
I couldn't leave you in there. I still love you, but I can't forgive you," Sarah Sugden said.
According to Digital Spy, Sarah told Charity she no longer trusted her and did not want her in her life.
Radio Times added that Sarah later told Jacob Sugden that Charity had agreed to transfer full parental responsibility for Leyla to them.
Thea's Demand and Viewer Reactions
Thea's role in Charity's release also became a new source of pressure.
TV Guide reported that Sarah had blackmailed Thea after discovering her connection with Serena Sugden, forcing the detective to tamper with interview recordings.
Thea later confronted Sarah at the shop and said Sarah owed her for helping secure Charity's release.
Viewers questioned whether that leverage could work because Sarah could potentially expose Thea's actions.
"Thea was very good tonight.
I'd watch your back if I were you, Sarah, although I'm not sure Thea's blackmail has much clout!"
a viewer said, as quoted by TV Guide.
The same report said another viewer challenged Thea's position, arguing that her actions had already placed her own career at risk.
"Thea, you do realise that blackmailing Sarah won't get you anywhere? Your superiors already know the evidence was botched.
You'll be out on your ear as a cop," another viewer said, as quoted by TV Guide.
A third viewer focused on what Sarah could do if she refused Thea's demand, pointing to the consequences for the detective if she admitted what she had done.
"I'm sorry, but what's Thea gonna do if Sarah says no to helping her?
Absolutely nothing, because what can she do other than get herself fired and possibly arrested for admitting what she did.
Nonsense!" a third viewer said, as quoted by TV Guide.
Metro reported that Sarah and Jacob are expected to stay with Robert Sugden and Aaron in Emmerdale Farm to keep away from Charity.
The next episode is scheduled for October 8 at 8 p. m.
on ITV1, with streaming available from 7 a. m.
on ITVX and YouTube.
