Josh Brolin has expressed confidence in the direction of the third Sicario film, which is moving forward without Taylor Sheridan as screenwriter.

Speaking with ScreenRant's Adam Barnard at New York Comic Con 2026, Brolin confirmed the sequel remains in development and is undergoing script revisions under Steven Knight.

The October 2026 announcement confirmed that Brolin, Benicio del Toro, and Emily Blunt would return for the crime thriller.

Padraic McKinley is set to direct, while Knight has taken over scripting duties from Sheridan, who wrote the first two installments.

Brolin described the production as still being in the development process, with the creative team reviewing and refining Knight's screenplay.

He also praised McKinley's contributions to the script and expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with his co-stars after the lengthy wait.

Discussing the prospect of returning to the set, Brolin emphasized the established relationships among the principal cast members and his excitement about working with them again.

"Then you find it, and then we all get super happy, and we all can't wait to get on set.

We all can't wait to get on set anyway. It's been a while.

We adore each other, and we've all worked together before. Benicio and I, this will be our sixth film together.

It's fantastic [to work with Emily again].

I just sent her a little voice memo yesterday, and I just adore her, I adore her.

I think the work right now has reached a level that's just untouchable," Brolin said.

Knight's appointment followed reports that Sheridan would return to write the sequel, making the change a notable development in the franchise's production.

The original Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, marked Sheridan's screenwriting debut and launched a series of crime stories associated with his work.

Sheridan subsequently expanded his reputation with projects including Hell or High Water and Wind River.

The latter also marked his directorial debut, while both films formed part of what has been described as his American Frontier trilogy alongside Sicario.

The decision to bring in Knight also introduces a screenwriter whose previous work has focused on different genres.

Across his 37-year career, Knight has become associated with Peaky Blinders and the World War II thriller series SAS: Rogue Heroes, rather than the Western and neo-Western stories commonly associated with Sheridan.

Sheridan's current commitments include the drama The Madison, the series Landman, a Call of Duty movie, a potential fourth season of Lioness, and the upcoming Tulsa King spinoff Frisco King.

He is also transitioning to a new first-look deal with NBCUniversal, according to ScreenRant.

The third installment, titled Sicario: Capos, follows 2018's Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

Its development has faced repeated delays, including disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike.

With Knight handling the screenplay and McKinley directing, the project is continuing through revisions ahead of production.

Brolin, del Toro, and Blunt are confirmed to return, while Sheridan's involvement in the third film's writing and direction remains absent from the announced creative lineup.
