Dame Judi Dench has drawn attention to Surrey's natural landscape and lifestyle appeal, where she has lived for nearly 40 years and maintained a six-acre woodland.

The actress describes the woodland as a source of comfort despite her deteriorating eyesight.

She said the woodland remains an important place of escape, noting her connection to the area through changing seasons.

"Whenever I can, whatever the season, this is where I escape to," Dench said.

She later told Jo Whiley that the woodland continues to provide emotional value even as her eyesight declines.

"I cannot see it, but I know it's there," she said.

Surrey's Green Spaces and Cultural Offer

Surrey has gained wider recognition for its countryside, with the Surrey Hills named among the best places to live by The Sunday Times.

According to Surrey County Council, woodland covers about 24% of the county, and around a quarter of that area is ancient woodland.

The county offers access to forests including Alice Holt Forest, Banstead Woods and Ashtead Common.

Research linking green spaces and forests with mental and physical wellbeing was cited as a reason natural areas remain attractive to residents.

Dench previously described the woodland's effect on her outlook, saying it still provides positive feelings despite her reduced vision.

Beyond its natural areas, Surrey features gardens, estates and cultural venues.

RHS Garden Wisley is the second most visited paid-entry garden in the UK, while more than 40 stately homes and gardens across the county are open to visitors.

The county also provides activities including gardening, photography, walking, wildlife watching and cycling around locations such as Box Hill.

Guildford offers theatres and live performances, while the Watts Gallery in Compton hosts exhibitions, talks and workshops.

Surrey includes towns with different lifestyles, including historic Farnham, picturesque Godalming, market-town Dorking and urban Woking, which has rail connections to London.

Trains from Guildford or Godalming can reach London's galleries, museums and theatres in around 35 to 40 minutes.

The county's popularity comes with higher housing costs.

Recent analysis from Lloyds found that Elmbridge was Britain's least affordable local authority.
