Authorities in Marin County are investigating a suspected double murder-suicide that killed former San Francisco Deputy Police Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired San Francisco Police Sgt.

Kevin Mannix at their Mill Valley home.

Deputies responded to a 911 call around 5 p. m.

Sunday after a caller who safely left the home contacted authorities, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies found the three family members dead inside. Autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday.

The sheriff's office identified the case as involving three individuals and said the suspected shooter was male.

"The preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double-murder suicide involving three individuals. The suspected shooter is male," said Miguel Almaguer, Marin County Sheriff's public information officer.

At a later briefing, Almaguer identified Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter but said investigators could not discuss evidence collected inside the home.

Ann Mannix remembered as trailblazing officer

Ann Mannix, 65, was a former SWAT commander and became the first woman to join and later lead the San Francisco Police Department's SWAT team, according to Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association.

"It is with profound sadness, shock, and heavy hearts that we address the devastating news that emerged out of Marin County on Sunday evening," Wong said.

"The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling."

Wong said Mannix supported youth sports programs for her children and others and served on the board of the city's Police Activities League.

He described her as a significant figure within the department community.

Lou Barberini, a former San Francisco police officer and Bay Area columnist who knew the couple, also reflected on Mannix's career and reputation.

"Ann had a lot of talent, and she was very competent. She was a great athlete, she was a good cop, and she was well-liked," Barberini said.

San Francisco police had not immediately responded to a request for comment. Authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
