Suspect Arrested After Philadelphia Officer Shane Seiber Shot Dead

A Philadelphia police officer died after being shot while responding to a report of an armed man in West Philadelphia, authorities said.

Officer Shane Seiber, 40, was shot three times and later died at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel.

A second officer was wounded 12 times and remained hospitalized in stable condition.

What Happened During the West Philadelphia Shooting

Officers from the 19th District were dispatched to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.

m. after a report of a man with a gun on a porch.

They arrived around 12:50 a. m.

and came under heavy gunfire, officials said.

The suspect fled and fired at additional officers who responded to the scene, police said.

A SWAT team later found the suspect hiding in a tree and took him into custody.

Investigators recovered two handguns and a shotgun.

The investigation remained active, with charges pending, according to police officials.

Bethel said Seiber was a 10-year veteran of the department, a husband, and the father of a 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter.

The commissioner said Seiber's family was with him before he died.

"He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today," Bethel said.

Bethel also described the surviving officer as a 33-year-old father of five.

"He's not out of the woods yet, but he is stable," Bethel said.

The commissioner said the department would face a period of mourning but would stand together.

Mayor Cherelle Parker said she spoke with the officers' families and expressed support after the shooting.

Parker also addressed the broader risks faced by police officers and urged the public to support the injured officers and their families.

"I want to be very clear, I am grateful for their service," Parker said.

Governor Josh Shapiro also expressed support for the officers and their families.

"We are grateful for their courage and service, and we are all hoping for their full and speedy recovery," Shapiro said.
