Chinese electric vehicle makers are expanding across Europe, with companies including BYD and Xiaomi targeting customers through lower priced cars.

Germany and other major markets have become key destinations as demand for electric vehicles rises, according to The New York Times.

BYD, China's largest electric vehicle maker, plans to open enough outlets in Germany so customers would not need to travel more than 20 minutes to buy one of its cars.

Xiaomi is also using Germany as the base for its European expansion after selling 700,000 cars in China.

Germany, home of Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, has become a major destination for Chinese automakers offering vehicles at lower prices than many European competitors.

"Customers don't care if it's a Chinese car or a German car," said Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, a German auto analyst and former executive at Porsche and other companies.

Dudenhöffer said buyers are focused on cost as Chinese brands compete in a market where affordability has become a major factor.

Chinese automakers have turned to Europe after facing tariffs that limit access to the United States.

Chinese cars now represent about one in every 10 vehicles sold in Europe, increasing from one in every 100 five years ago.

The growth has accelerated as rising gasoline prices encourage interest in electric vehicles.

BYD's European sales have more than doubled this year, while Chery has recorded even faster growth.

Chery's Jaecoo 7 became Britain's best-selling vehicle in September, where it was known as the "Temu Range Rover" because of comparisons to the Chinese bargain shopping platform.

European manufacturers are facing stronger competition from Chinese brands that are expanding their dealer networks and product offerings.

Xiaomi plans to increase its presence after partnering with eight dealers in Germany.
