Samuel Defeats Goffin in Final Roland Garros Appearance

Samuel, who rose from outside the top 1,300 to a career-high ranking of 159th after four ATP Challenger Tour titles, defeated former world number seven David Goffin 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

The match marked Goffin's final career appearance at Roland Garros.

"First of all, it was an honour to play against David in his last Roland Garros," Samuel said, addressing the crowd inside the Suzanne Lenglen arena.

"You're an inspiration to all tennis players out there, it was amazing sharing the court with you. It was the craziest atmosphere I've ever been a part of."

Samuel will next face Gonzalo Bueno of Peru for a place in the main draw.
