Australia heads to the FIFA World Cup in North America this summer with a clear goal: reach the quarterfinals for the first time in history.

Tony Popovic's team secured their spot by finishing second in AFC third-round Group C, collecting 19 points behind Japan.

The qualifying campaign included a historic 1-0 win over Japan in Perth, the only defeat the Samurai Blue suffered during qualification.

Popovic took over as head coach in September 2024 after Graham Arnold stepped down, stabilizing the team with an eight-game unbeaten streak.

This marks Australia's sixth consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall, despite a recent 1-0 friendly loss to Mexico at the Rose Bowl.

Youth and Experience Blend

The 26-man squad features 17 players set to make their tournament debut, balanced by experienced leaders like captain Mathew Ryan and forward Mathew Leckie, both appearing in their fourth World Cup.

The team suffered a major blow before the tournament as Riley McGree was ruled out with a hamstring injury from Middlesbrough's Championship play-off final.

Cristian Volpato earned his spot after switching international allegiance from Italy to Australia just days before the squad announcement.

Australia's forward options include Connor Metcalfe, Mathew Leckie, Nishan Velupillay, Cristian Volpato, Nestory Irankunda, Awer Mabil, Ajdin Hrustic, Mohamed Toure, and Tete Yengi.
