Carlos Cordeiro, a senior advisor to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, resigned on July 31, 2026, amid growing opposition from major continental confederations.
The controversy centers on FIFA's proposal to establish FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a $20 billion commercial entity backed by private equity, including Thrive Eternal.

Cordeiro, former president of the United States Soccer Federation, joined Infantino's advisory team in 2021.
He announced his departure on social media platform X, distancing himself from the plan.
"A bad deal for member associations and a bad deal for football," said Cordeiro.
His resignation followed an emergency meeting where UEFA's 55 member associations voted unanimously to boycott future men's and women's FIFA competitions, declaring that the World Cup was not for sale.
"As a senior advisor to the FIFA president and a lifelong football fan, I cannot stand by while FIFA considers selling a stake in the World Cup," Cordeiro stated.
"Let me be clear. I had no part in this plan.
The FIFA president himself noted that between 2022 and 2026, revenues reached 15 billion dollars.
Against that backdrop, it is hard to understand why a permanent stake in football's most valuable asset would be sold to raise 4.2 billion dollars."
Following UEFA's lead, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) expressed grave concerns over the proposal's potential to undermine the universal nature of the global tournament.

"The World Cup is not for sale," said UEFA.
