A chaotic Fourth of July celebration on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach erupted into violence Saturday night, resulting in at least 100 arrests and injuries to several police officers.
Large crowds ignited illegal fireworks and engaged in fistfights, prompting the Newport Beach Police Department to request county-wide assistance around 7 p.

Aerial footage from CBS LA showed at least one injured person being transported by ambulance during the unrest.
Authorities formed a skirmish line and locked down the area.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department deployed deputies to assist local police, said department spokesperson Carrie Braun.
Witnesses reported that heavily armed officers in riot gear were deployed, and checkpoints were established to manage the gridlocked area.

“Newport (Peninsula) had a literal riot and the entire place is locked down with more cops than I knew existed, most insane I’ve ever seen down here,” a Reddit user wrote Saturday evening.
Local infrastructure faced significant disruption, causing major transport impacts. “No one can come or go right now, it’s all shut down,” the user added.
Residents had to navigate police security measures to access their properties. “I had to drive through a checkpoint with heavily armed police to get home,” another poster said.
The disruption also impacted gig economy workers. “I was doing Uber and was getting insane surges from that area,” a driver wrote.
The disturbance follows recent city efforts to curb disruptive vacation partying, including stricter short-term rental rules and increased fines in special enforcement zones covering West Newport and Corona Del Mar.

Newport Beach city leaders previously reported 76 holiday arrests last year and roughly 500 arrests during spring break in 2025.
