Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup after a commanding 4-1 victory over the United States in the round of 16 on July 7, 2026.

Charles De Ketelaere scored two goals, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku each added one to eliminate the host nation.

Belgium took an early lead in the ninth minute. Nicolas Raskin intercepted a pass and set up De Ketelaere, who finished from close range.

The Belgians suffered a blow in the 21st minute when midfielder Amadou Onana left the field with a knee injury.

Hans Vanaken replaced him.

The United States equalized in the 31st minute. Malik Tillman's free kick deflected off Vanaken past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for an own goal.

Belgium responded quickly.

Two minutes later, Leandro Trossard crossed to the far post, where De Ketelaere beat defender Tim Ream with a header to restore the lead.

The European side extended its advantage in the 57th minute. De Ketelaere dispossessed American goalkeeper Matt Freese, allowing Vanaken to shoot into an empty net from distance.

United States forward Christian Pulisic was substituted due to injury in the 59th minute. Replacements Sebastian Berhalter and Folarin Balogun missed chances to cut the deficit.

Romelu Lukaku scored the final goal in stoppage time to complete the 4-1 victory.

Belgium will now face Spain in the quarterfinals.
