Drivers in central Greece are risking their lives daily by crossing a bridge that collapsed nearly three years ago.

The Palaiopyrgos bridge in Larissa buckled during Storm Daniel in September 2023 and has never been repaired.

Locals, especially farmers, use the ruined crossing to avoid a long detour via the National Highway.

The concrete span now sags inches above the Pineios River, yet pickups and SUVs traverse it as if nothing is wrong.

Drone footage from local outlet LarissaNet shows a Ford Ranger climbing the steep slope of the broken bridge, resembling an off-road course rather than a public road.

The deformation is obvious, but warning signs are ignored.

Convenience Over Safety

For residents, the time and fuel saved by using the bridge outweigh the danger.

The only alternative is a slow highway detour that adds significant cost for farmers watching the clock and fuel gauge.

However, every trip carries the risk of a rescue operation.

Tourists, unaware of the hazard, are often routed by navigation systems to the collapsed bridge, forcing sudden U-turns when they see the cracked concrete.

Traffic is officially banned, but without physical barriers, the signs are easy to disregard.

Local news hopes the viral drone footage will push authorities to install real closures before a serious accident occurs.
