Such criticism from prominent Republicans would have been politically extraordinary just a few years ago.

The debate is not new.

In April 2024, dozens of lawyers inside and outside the Biden administration called for halting military aid to Israel, arguing the state had likely violated US law and the Geneva conventions.

A more consequential battle lies ahead.

The National Defense Authorization Act includes the US-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative, which would deepen defense-industrial integration between the two countries.

Senator Bernie Sanders has warned it would move toward unprecedented integration with little congressional scrutiny.

Massie and Representative Ro Khanna have tried to remove the provision but were blocked in the House rules committee.

This year's Democratic primaries have elevated candidates who ran explicitly against the old consensus—progressives in New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Illinois who campaigned on cutting aid and criticizing Aipac.

They won in solidly Democratic districts and head to Washington with mandates to reject the positions Jeffries and Vance are defending.

Wednesday's vote may fade from the news cycle, but the pattern it revealed is unlikely to: a bipartisan floor that held for 50 years is buckling from both directions.
