Car and Driver's latest tests reveal a surprising matchup: an eight-seat Mazda CX-90 is both lighter and faster at top speed than the 2026 Dodge Charger R/T.
The publication recorded a curb weight of 4,921 lbs (2,232 kg) for the Charger R/T, making it 25 lbs (11 kg) heavier than the Mazda CX-90, which tipped the scales at 4,896 lbs (2,221 kg).

This is unexpected because the Mazda can carry up to eight occupants, while the Charger is a performance sedan with room for only four or five.
Automaker figures differ: Mazda lists the CX-90 at 4,846 lbs, and Dodge quotes 4,741 lbs for the Charger R/T.
However, Car and Driver's numbers are directly comparable as they were gathered by the same team.

Performance Comparison
The CX-90 tested used Mazda's entry-level turbocharged inline-six producing 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It reached 60 mph in 6.9 seconds.
The Charger R/T packs a twin-turbo six-cylinder generating 420 hp and completed the same sprint in 4.7 seconds, making it the clear winner in acceleration.
However, the Dodge is electronically limited to 125 mph. The publication found the Mazda can reach 127 mph, giving it a narrow victory in top speed.

While the 2 mph advantage is largely academic in the US, it gives Mazda owners a talking point against the more powerful Charger.
