Genesis has launched its first global Magma model, the GV60 Magma, a high-performance electric crossover that aims to blend thrilling driving dynamics with the luxury and refinement expected from the Korean brand.

Priced from AU$130,000 (US$90,300) in Australia and US$69,950 in the US (plus destination), the GV60 Magma is positioned above the standard GV60 and the related Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

Powertrain and Performance

The GV60 Magma shares its dual-motor powertrain with the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N, producing a peak 641 hp (478 kW) and 582 lb-ft (790 Nm) of torque.

Genesis quotes a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.4 seconds, and the car feels every bit as quick as that figure suggests.

A Boost button on the steering wheel adds an extra 40 hp and 37 lb-ft for 15-second bursts.

The Magma features simulated gear shifts with eight virtual ratios, delivering a kick through the chassis that enhances the driving experience.

The active sound design system mimics a six-cylinder engine revving to 9,000 rpm, with exterior speakers so others can hear it too.

Unlike the more extreme N models, the GV60 Magma offers fewer performance menus and is less configurable, underscoring its more refined focus.

Design and Interior

The GV60 Magma sits lower and wider than the standard model, with distinctive bumpers, forged 21-inch alloy wheels, and a rear spoiler.

Inside, it gains a 27-inch single screen housing the instrument cluster and infotainment display.

The cabin features 10-way adjustable sports bucket seats, white contrast stitching, and a unique steering wheel with an orange Magma dial.

Black suede-like Chamude material covers the door panels, seats, and headliner, creating a premium atmosphere.

A dedicated Magma menu in the infotainment system allows adjustment of performance settings and live metrics.

Driving Dynamics

The GV60 Magma rides on bespoke Pirelli P Zero Elect tires and features stroke-sensing electronically controlled suspension.

Grip is tenacious, and the car hides its 5,004 lb (2,270 kg) curb weight well, feeling more compact than the Ioniq 5 N on twisty roads.

The ride is firm even in Comfort mode but remains comfortable enough for daily driving.

Brakes are massive: 400 mm front discs with four-piston calipers and 360 mm rear discs with single-piston calipers, stopping from 100 km/h in 33.8 meters.

In Range or Comfort mode, the Magma goes silent and glides like a luxury crossover.

Regenerative braking offers three levels plus one-pedal mode and an automatic mode that adjusts based on navigation data.

Efficiency and Charging

Genesis quotes a combined efficiency of 21.5 kWh/100 km, giving a range of 425 km (264 miles).

However, real-world testing returned closer to 27 kWh/100 km, reducing range to just over 300 km (186 miles).

The 800-volt architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 265 kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in 18 minutes on a 350 kW charger.

Verdict

The GV60 Magma is an excellent performance EV that delivers driving thrills without the hard edge of Hyundai's N cars.

It won't be a high-volume seller, but it serves as a compelling statement of Genesis's ambitions for the Magma brand.
