Acura is reportedly planning a new flagship three-row SUV that will sit above the MDX, targeting the spacious Lexus TX and other large luxury crossovers.
According to Automotive News, internal documents refer to the model as the "Acura XL," with production expected to begin in September 2029 at Honda's plant in Lincoln, Alabama.

The move addresses a long-standing gap in Acura's lineup. While the MDX remains a strong seller, its third row is considered cramped compared to newer competitors.
The new model would offer genuine family-hauling capability, a segment that reached nearly 195,000 U. S.
sales last year.
Hybrid Powertrain and Production Plans
The XL is set to receive an all-new large-vehicle hybrid powertrain, balancing premium performance with improved efficiency. No details on cylinder count or output have been revealed.
Annual production could reach up to 40,000 units.
This shift toward hybrids aligns with Honda's scaled-back EV plans after a difficult 2025.
Acura recently passed Cadillac and Audi in first-half sales to become the fourth-largest luxury brand in the U.

Some dealers are pushing for an even more substantial vehicle.
An unnamed Acura retailer told Automotive News that the brand needs a "full-fledged large SUV" on a body-on-frame platform or extended wheelbase to take on the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Cadillac Escalade.
"It's a missed opportunity if they don't do it," the retailer said.
The XL would also compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, and upcoming Audi Q9, likely at a lower price point.
The plan revives a shelved project from the mid-to-late 2000s, when Acura explored V-8s and rear-wheel-drive platforms before the global financial crisis.
Honda has declined to comment.

The XL name may not survive to production, but it signals Acura's intent to finally offer a truly large three-row SUV.
