The Jaecoo J5 EV is one of the cheapest electric SUVs on sale, but its bargain price comes with compromises that may deter buyers.

Jaecoo, a brand established in 2023, has quickly gained traction overseas, particularly in the UK, where its larger Jaecoo 7 has earned the nickname 'Temu Range Rover'.

The smaller J5 EV, which starts at AU$36,990 (US$26,000) in Australia, also borrows styling cues from Land Rover, earning it the 'Baby Range Rover' tag.

Interior and Features

Inside, the J5 EV feels more premium than its price suggests, with soft synthetic leather and a modern design.

However, the portrait-oriented infotainment screen has a major flaw: climate controls are not accessible while using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The software is basic, and the screen suffers from glare, making it hard to see in bright conditions.

Practicality is a strong point, with 480 liters of cargo space and a flat rear floor that accommodates adults comfortably.

Driving Experience

The J5 EV's single motor produces 201 hp and 288 Nm, allowing a 0-100 km/h sprint in about 7.7 seconds.

While adequate for city driving, the front-wheel-drive setup suffers from noticeable torque steer under hard acceleration.

The ride is generally comfortable, but the regenerative braking system is poorly calibrated, making smooth stops difficult.

Despite its flaws, the J5 EV offers a compelling package for budget-conscious EV buyers, but it's not without significant compromises.
