The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final on Monday at the Bell Centre.

The best-of-seven series now stands at 2-1 in favor of Carolina.

Carolina entered the contest following a 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday night to level the series.

Montreal returned home after failing to win consecutive games this postseason, despite previous road wins in Game 7 matchups against Tampa Bay and Buffalo.

Nikolaj Ehlers, the Hurricanes' offseason addition, carried his team in Game 2 with two goals, including the game-winner at 3:29 of overtime.

The play developed when defenseman Jalen Chatfield bounced the puck back to Mark Jankowski, who redirected it to a fast-moving Ehlers for a clean look at the net.

Defensive Pressure Key

Carolina's aggressive forecheck and defensive pressure limited Montreal to just 12 shots on goal in Game 2.

The Hurricanes successfully suffocated the Canadiens' top line of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Juraj Slafkovsky, holding them to a combined four shots on net.

Canadiens winger Josh Anderson served as a veteran anchor for the league's youngest playoff roster, ranking second on the team with five postseason goals.

Anderson scored twice in Game 2, including the tying goal at 12:51 of the third period to force overtime.

"It's been an emotional roller-coaster, honestly," said Anderson, a 32-year-old forward.

Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes made 23 saves in the Game 2 defeat but could not stop the final sudden-death sequence.

"We didn't get a second breath," Dobes said.

Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind'Amour praised Ehlers after the victory. "He's a special talent," Brind'Amour said, "and it was on full display tonight."

The victory marked Brind'Amour's 100th postseason game behind the bench for the Hurricanes, a tenure beginning in the 2018-19 season.

Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal have played in all 100 of those playoff games under his leadership.

Ehlers expressed excitement after securing the crucial victory.

"I can barely talk right now, but I was yelling pretty loudly after that OT winner," he said.

He detailed the strategy: "It was a great pass ...

and then just try to get some speed and get the puck off my stick as quick as possible and try to surprise the goalie."

Montreal head coach Martin St. Louis acknowledged Carolina's defensive pressure.

"It's hard to go 200 feet and produce offense unless you execute a little bit through that pressure," St. Louis said.

"I felt today we weren't terrible, we just weren't as good as Thursday."

Game 3 Action

In Game 3, Carolina took an early lead when defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored his first goal of the postseason with 11:36 remaining in the first period, assisted by Jankowski and Eric Robinson.

Montreal answered later in the period when Mike Matheson scored on a high glove-side slap shot off a pass from Ivan Demidov.

The Hurricanes recaptured the lead less than a minute later as K'Andre Miller assisted Taylor Hall for a 2-1 advantage, with Jackson Blake earning the secondary assist.

Montreal tied the game at 2-2 during a second-period power play when Lane Hutson scored off a give-and-go with Cole Caufield, capitalizing on a slashing penalty assessed to Jordan Martinook.

A potential go-ahead goal by Montreal in the third period was overturned after the Hurricanes successfully challenged the play for offsides with 12:01 remaining.

Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final series is scheduled for Wednesday night in Montreal.
