The Vegas Golden Knights advanced to the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday night by defeating the Colorado Avalanche 2-1, completing a four-game sweep of the Presidents' Trophy winners in Las Vegas.
The victory marks the third championship appearance for Vegas in its nine-season history.
The Golden Knights relied heavily on deep roster contributions, defensive blocks, and strong goaltending to contain the high-scoring Avalanche offense throughout the series.
Depth Scoring and Defense Key
Team captain Mark Stone reflected on the roster construction that mirrored the franchise's 2023 championship run, which featured widespread scoring across the lineup.
"I think we've always built our teams with good depth at the forward position, defensive position and goaltending position," said Stone.
"I guess the similarities are that's just the way we build our teams."
During the 2023 postseason, 18 players scored goals and 12 reached double-digit points over 22 games.
In the current playoff run, 15 different Vegas players have scored goals and six have collected 10 or more points through 16 games.
The deciding goal in the series-clinching game came from depth forward Cole Smith with 5:45 remaining in the contest.
Head coach John Tortorella praised the performance of his lower-line players and defensive pairs against Colorado's speed.
"The third and fourth lines, the five- and six-D, that's how you continue to move in the playoffs," said Tortorella.
"Those are very important pieces as you go through these series. I'm happy for Smitty.
I was going to kill him; he's taking so many penalties. But I'm happy for him and (Dylan Coghlan and Kaedan Korczak).
I mean, how well did they play.
Playing against that team with the amount of speed that they bring, they weren't intimidated by a thing."
Defensive partners Dylan Coghlan and Kaedan Korczak helped restrict Colorado to an average of 1.75 goals per game during the series, down from the Avalanche's regular-season average of 3.63.
Vegas defenders also excelled at blocking shots, led by Shea Theodore's 46 postseason blocks.
Goaltender Carter Hart has anchored the defense, playing ahead of 2023 playoff hero Adin Hill. Hart maintained a 12-4 record with a .
924 save percentage and a 2.22 goals-against average during this postseason run.
"Hartsy's been amazing this whole series, whole playoffs really," said forward Mitch Marner. "Made some massive saves throughout all these games and again tonight.
Made some massive ones for us to keep the game where it was. Hell of a game by Hartsy again."
The Golden Knights will face either the Carolina Hurricanes or the Montreal Canadiens, who are currently competing in the Eastern Conference Final, to determine the next Stanley Cup champion.
