The Philadelphia Flyers have long sought a top power-play quarterback, and this year's free agency class offers several options.
Among them, John Carlson has been linked to the Flyers in recent rumors.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet sparked speculation by noting on the "32 Thoughts" podcast that Carlson might want to return to the Eastern Conference.
Since then, no confirmed reports have named the Flyers as a top destination, but the fit remains intriguing.
Carlson's Fit with the Flyers
Carlson, 36, would address two key needs: a power-play quarterback and a top-pair defenseman.
Last season, he recorded 14 goals and 60 points in 71 games between the Washington Capitals and Anaheim Ducks, with 14 power-play points.
That total would have tied for second on the Flyers.
Philadelphia's current power-play quarterbacks, Jamie Drysdale and Cam York, combined for 16 points. Carlson would provide an immediate upgrade.
According to Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff, the Flyers are willing to offer a two-year deal with an average annual value around $8 million.
Carlson proved he still has high-level play after his trade to the Ducks, posting 4 goals and 14 points in 16 games, plus 6 assists in 12 playoff games.
He would also mentor young defensemen Oliver Bonk and David Jiricek, who are developing in the system.
The Flyers have significant cap space—approximately $37.5 million—making a Carlson signing financially feasible.
Potential Logjam on Defense
Signing Carlson would create a logjam on the right side, joining Rasmus Ristolainen, Drysdale, Jiricek, and Bonk.
This could force Bonk to the AHL, as he is waiver-exempt, while Jiricek is not.
Drysdale, who earned more minutes last season, might be pushed to a third-pair role.
Di Marco also reported the Flyers are open to trading Ristolainen, but they are not forced to do so given their cap space.
Without a trade, Carlson and Ristolainen would likely occupy top-four spots, limiting ice time for younger players.
Despite the potential logjam, the benefits of adding a proven veteran like Carlson may outweigh the drawbacks. The Flyers can address the roster balance later in the offseason.
