The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is proceeding with plans to host the 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar as scheduled, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions involving nearby Iran, as reported on Friday, June 5, 2026.

Global basketball officials retain flexibility to alter arrangements if the conflict mandates intervention.

The 32-team flagship tournament remains scheduled to run for roughly two and a half weeks in Doha, beginning on August 27, 2027.

FIBA Secretary General Comments on Preparations

"We have excellent partners in Qatar," said Andreas Zagklis, secretary general of FIBA, during a media roundtable in San Antonio while attending Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

The global governing body is closely monitoring regional stability while the local organizing committee continues logistical preparations.

Qatar, which secured the hosting rights as the sole bidder, marks the first time the tournament will visit the Arab world.

"If things arrive at that spot, I'm sure we will have very good and direct conversations, and we'll find the best possible solution for the players and the fans," Zagklis said.

The tournament will serve as a direct qualifying path for seven countries into the men's basketball event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

High-level government backing in Doha has insulated the project from recent hostilities, according to basketball officials.

"We have a board meeting of the FIBA and the (local organizing committee) of the World Cup on Monday.

I will get the latest updates," Zagklis said.

The compact nature of the Doha tournament will allow all 32 competing national squads to play across four venues situated within a 25-minute radius.

This setup provides fans an unprecedented opportunity to attend multiple games per day.

"I can tell you that the organizing committee has not stopped a single day.

This is a project that has been made clear to us, by the highest levels of the government, is a project of national importance.

And as you know, Qatar, since April 1, has not been affected, impacted by the hostilities," Zagklis said.

The governing body is also finalizing structural designs for a new NBA Europe league in partnership with the NBA.

Officials have reached a consensus regarding the season schedule, playoff formats, and home-game distribution for participating clubs.

"I can tell you the level of preparedness and importance and investment that goes into the project shows that they treat it as what it is: It's the biggest celebration of national team basketball in the world," Zagklis said.

Further operational details regarding the European expansion remain confidential until an official public announcement is prepared by competition experts.

"It will be the first time that we will have 32 teams (and) four venues within 25 minutes.

It is a dream of every basketball fan to visit and watch two or even three games per day.

This is our ambition, and of course, we're following very closely," Zagklis said.

"We know, but I think it's not appropriate to make this level of granularity (public) before we announce," he added.

"I can tell you, and you will not be surprised, that we are looking at a postseason that will give the chance to the teams to have number of home games," Zagklis said.

"And this is one of the elements that I would let the competition experts finalize and announce to you," he concluded.
