Jagex canceled RuneScape Reignited on October 15, less than two weeks after announcing the project at RuneFest 2026.
The decision followed player criticism over a separate fresh-start experience that raised concerns about splitting the long-running MMORPG's community.
The studio confirmed the cancellation in an official blog post and a YouTube video featuring Mod Ryan, associate creative director Ryan Philpott.
Reignited had been unveiled on October 3 as a new starting point for new and returning players.
Community Concerns Prompt Reversal
According to PC Gamer, backlash emerged quickly after the reveal.
Complaints focused on a possible community split, limits on character interactions, and the prospect of needing a separate subscription.
Mod Ryan said the team received many perspectives from players and appreciated everyone sharing their views.
He noted that the last time the studio did not listen to player feedback, combat changed forever and it took over a decade to recover.
He added that he had said on stage they would not repeat past mistakes and that he stands by that commitment.
Considering this, the studio made the decision to cancel Reignited.
Jagex said the cancellation does not change its broader plans to bring in new and returning players.
IGN reported that the game will instead offer a 10-day free trial starting December 2 for new characters and for any character without membership since June 2.
Mod Ryan said it is clear they missed the mark on this and so they are not moving forward with it.
He added that the goal is to see RuneScape grow again, with returning players coming back and new players joining, but never at the expense of the existing community.
The studio also said other updates are still moving ahead.
According to IGN, Jagex plans to release the Adventure Guide, the first part of the Remastered Journey, and additional improvements alongside its continuing Road to Restoration work.
Ryan Philpott said there is tons of combat and skilling content throughout.
He said the team is bringing decade-old storylines to a close, with a return to a proper grandmaster quest.
He also said they are reworking a core skill fundamental to the player experience: Agility.
All of this while still continuing to deliver meaningful changes as part of the Road to Restoration.
PC Gamer noted that Jagex has reversed course on other disputed RuneScape changes in recent years, including a 2023 battle pass and Treasure Hunter microtransactions in 2025.
The latest decision follows several days of revisions and renewed feedback requests after Reignited's announcement.
Ryan Philpott said the future of RuneScape is still extremely bright.
He said RuneScape will always be built for and defined by its community.
He asked players to keep letting the team know when they feel something is wrong and to shout with the same energy when they think it is right.
According to IGN, Jagex still plans to launch Plugins on Monday, October 19, and its 2027 roadmap remains in place.
RuneScape 4, announced separately at RuneFest, is still described as a next-generation Unreal Engine project without a release date.
