Arizona Wildcats freshman guard Bryce James is evaluating multiple career options for 2027, including professional entry, the transfer portal, or remaining in college, after choosing to bypass the 2026 NBA draft.
The Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio native redshirted in early February to preserve his four years of eligibility under Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd.
Analysts from Bleacher Report identified the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers as primary NBA landing spots for the 19-year-old prospect due to organizational ties with his father, LeBron James.
Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd detailed the developmental plan for the three-star recruit during a February interview with the Big 12 Network.
"The redshirting decision was just a long play, to give Bryce the most options in his career as his career unfolds," Lloyd told the Big 12 Network.
The Wildcats program offers a strong foundation for multi-year development, coming off a Final Four appearance and securing four Sweet 16 berths during Lloyd's five-year tenure.
"I have real strong belief that Bryce will be a contributor at Arizona in the near future," said Lloyd.
The freshman guard continues to adjust to the collegiate level, with analysts viewing him as a developing prospect regarding his athleticism and physical stature.
"He's really shown a lot of progress, not only learning our system but just physically maturing," stated Lloyd.
Potential professional pathways draw parallels to his older brother, Bronny James, who entered the professional ranks after playing one season at USC.
"Bronny James wasn't exactly considered a can't-miss NBA prospect when he entered the 2024 NBA draft," wrote Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report.
The older James sibling averaged just 4.8 points per game while shooting 36.6% from the field during his one season with USC.
The Los Angeles Lakers selected Bronny with the No. 55 overall pick, demonstrating a willingness to integrate family ties into their roster construction.
"Yet that didn't stop the Los Angeles Lakers from drafting him and making him teammates with his famous father.
Bronny has remained a secondary contributor for the Lakers, although he saw important minutes in the team's first-round win over the Houston Rockets when Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were sidelined," wrote Polacek.
Should the younger James choose to transfer instead of declaring for the draft, Duquesne has emerged as a potential destination due to head coach Dru Joyce III's relationship with LeBron James.
"It is not exactly a stretch to suggest a team that has LeBron James on the roster would be willing to draft another one of his sons since basketball fans just saw it happen in 2024.
While LeBron's own future is up in the air at this point, the thought here is that he will either remain with the Lakers or join the Cleveland Cavaliers as a fitting homecoming if he doesn't retire.
And that means they are both potential landing spots for Bryce," wrote Polacek.
Bryce James will need to complete a full season of college basketball to fully solidify his positioning for the 2027 NBA selection process.
