Extended roadworks on the A44 highway toward Amsterdam have caused severe traffic congestion on the alternative A4 route, with delays exceeding one hour for commuters on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
Omroep West reported a 25-kilometer traffic jam between Den Hague and Leimuiden at 8:15 a. m.
, marking the second consecutive morning of major disruptions on the A4 corridor.
Rijkswaterstaat extended the maintenance project by two days because extreme summer temperatures prevented crews from working around the clock.
The highway is now expected to reopen on Friday, July 3, 2026, at 6:00 a. m.
Viaduct Replacement Underway
The current phase involves replacing the 90-year-old Lisserweg viaduct, requiring a full closure of the Amsterdam-bound A44 from the Noordwijkerhout exit to the Burgerveen junction.
Rijkswaterstaat representative Dick van der Kolk explained that schedule adjustments were necessary to ensure crew safety during peak daylight heat.
"It has everything to do with the weather," he said. "We must protect our people.
So we will carry out as much work as possible outside peak times, at the edges of the day.
It is not possible to work 24 hours a day."
Van der Kolk noted that the historical structure had deteriorated over decades of heavy use. "That is very badly needed.
We are talking about a 90-year-old viaduct that even survived the war. Due to intensive use, it is now really due for replacement."
Regarding why the project was not postponed until school holidays, Van der Kolk said there is too little time during holidays to complete all necessary work on national highways.
Motorists on detour routes have reported significant impacts on travel times. "It really takes a lot longer to get to the location," said Mario, an affected motorist.
"That's just annoying, but it has to be done. It is what it is."
The project will also affect southbound commuters toward The Hague later in the week, with a scheduled closure of the A44 between the Burgerveen junction and the Kaag exit from Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 9:00 p.
