A three-year-old boy is recovering at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge after sustaining serious injuries when he entered a crocodile enclosure at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambridgeshire on June 18.
The child has already undergone five surgical procedures, and his family anticipates at least two additional operations alongside an extended period of rehabilitation.
Incident and Rescue
Cambridgeshire Police stated that the ambulance service alerted officers to the incident at 1:24 p. m.
, reporting that the boy suffered severe injuries before zoo staff pulled him to safety.
The zoo's co-owner, Tracey Johnson, reportedly leaped into the enclosure to rescue the toddler, prompting praise from management regarding the rapid emergency response by employees and visitors.
"Everyone who was on site that day acted with incredible speed and determination," stated the owners of Johnsons of Old Hurst in a social media post.
The management noted that off-duty paramedics and police officers assisted at the scene within minutes of the initial radio call before the MAGPAS Air Ambulance arrived.
"Within minutes of the first radio call, the child had been rescued from the enclosure and was receiving first aid," stated the zoo owners.
Authorities arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder following the incident, though he was later released on bail after officials assessed him as unfit for interview due to learning difficulties.
Family's Situation and Community Support
A crowdfunding campaign established to assist the family during their prolonged stay at the medical facility has raised more than £25,000 to cover immediate living expenses and future rehabilitation costs.
"We are extremely grateful for everyone's generosity," stated the parents in an update posted to the fundraising page.
The couple explained that they have remained at the medical facility for two weeks while their son underwent multiple operations, noting that the period has been highly unpredictable.
"We could never thank you enough for the support you have given our family in this horrible time," added the parents.
The family shared that both parents are currently away from work for an indefinite duration, and they plan to direct further donations toward their son's recovery and supporting the hospital staff.
"We have been living at the hospital for two weeks now and our son has undergone five surgeries," stated the parents.
