BBC interviewer Annabel Croft apologized to Alexander Zverev during an on-court interview at Wimbledon on Saturday after the German tennis star reacted to statistics about his serving prowess.

Croft, a former British number one, praised the number two seed for delivering 17 aces and clocking the fastest average serve at the tournament at 132mph during his straight-sets victory over Marcos Giron on Court No. 1.

She asked Zverev how important it would be to maintain that performance level throughout the rest of the Grand Slam.

Zverev countered the compliment by explaining that such statistical praise usually has a negative psychological impact on his subsequent performances.

"Normally when people tell me these kind of things it always goes backwards," Zverev replied.

Croft quickly backtracked from her comments following the unexpected response. "Sorry," she said.

Zverev then joked about increasing his serving speed before emphasizing the tactical advantage of a strong serve on grass courts.

"I'm going to try to serve at 133 miles per hour next match on average so I keep that up.

But when the serve goes in, it's always helpful, especially on a grass court," Zverev said.

The German player entered Wimbledon following his first Grand Slam victory at the Roland Garros final in June, where he defeated Flavio Cobolli.

"I feel different from last year," Zverev said.

He noted that his recent performances have provided a significant confidence boost during critical moments compared to his first-round exit in 2025.

"I feel like I play better tennis and feel like I [at] important moments have a bit more confidence, which is always very helpful," Zverev said.

He expressed his desire to prolong his campaign at the All England Club after his third-round victory.

"I'm through to the fourth round, I want to keep going and I want to play a lot more great matches.

Out here on Court 1, stadium court, whatever, I just enjoy my time out here on court," Zverev said.

The French Open champion added that entering the grass-court tournament with a recent Grand Slam title provides a mental edge.

"I just hope to continue doing that and, of course, winning in Paris, coming in here with a title like that, I think helps everybody," Zverev said.

He concluded his post-match thoughts by outlining his ambitions for the remainder of the tournament.

"It doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter how many Grand Slams you've won.

For me, it's my first one so I'm very happy about that but of course now I want to keep going," Zverev said.

In a separate interview with ELLE magazine, Croft reflected on her long broadcasting career and discussed the evolving intersection of fashion and professional tennis at Wimbledon.

"My kids always say they can't keep up with my energy, I just motor on through," Croft said.

She noted that the current tournament has already delivered highly competitive matches and unexpected results on the grass courts.

"It's just fun.

It's got great atmosphere, huge crowds and there've already been some exciting matches, a couple of upsets…" Croft said.

The commentator recalled being in the broadcast booth to witness the return of Serena Williams, who was eliminated by 20-year-old Australian player Maya Joint.

"I thought her level was absolutely jaw-dropping.

I felt like she would have beaten three quarters of the draw with the level she played, but she was against a young, up-and-coming star who matched it and raised the bar," Croft said.

Croft described the intense atmosphere inside the stadium during the former champion's emotional exit.

"It was an incredible night witnessing [Serena's] comeback, getting the standing ovation, and just the electricity around the whole arena," Croft said.

However, she noted that the American star appeared visibly dissatisfied with the final outcome.

"But I know she wasn't happy, because the handshake was pretty swift," Croft said.

The television pundit explained that she collaborates with her youngest daughter, Lily, to choose her daily on-camera outfits for the broadcast.

"I love fashion and being able to use Wimbledon as a place to enjoy the fashion as well," Croft said.

She noted that her children provide direct feedback regarding her wardrobe choices before she goes on air.

"She'll come into my dressing area and start picking out things and going, 'I think you should wear this, don't wear that, no, that looks awful'," Croft said.

Croft admitted that she has developed greater styling confidence over the years and prefers bold choices.

"I think if I feel good in an outfit, it makes it gives me extra confidence, and I never want to feel like an outfit is wearing me," Croft said.

She credited her children with changing her perspective on choosing clothing for television appearances.

"Whereas before I would probably have been much shyer about wearing certain things, my two daughters have pushed me in a direction with fashion that I've got more comfortable with being bolder," Croft said.

The broadcaster also praised current players like Naomi Osaka for using creative custom designs on the court.

"I love the fact that tennis players push the boundaries," Croft said.

She argued that striking outfits worn by modern players serve a functional purpose during competitive matches.

"If anything, it's kind of an intimidation factor," Croft said.

Croft concluded that unique fashion statements help attract wider public interest and television viewership to the sport.

"I think it's quite clever from a sporting point of view, because she really is making a statement, and the opponent's got to cope with all of that going on and not get distracted.

But I think actually anything that gets eyeballs onto tennis and makes people watch it is positive," Croft said.

Following his victory over Giron, Alexander Zverev will next face 13th seed Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round of the tournament.
