The win sets up a knockout match against Switzerland on Tuesday, July 7, in Vancouver.
Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, finishing a cross at the back post past Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.
This victory marks only the second knockout-round win in World Cup history for Colombia, following their 2014 triumph against Uruguay.
Historic Journey Across Host Nations
With this progression, Colombia becomes the only team in the 48-team tournament to play matches across all three host nations: Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The South American team previously played in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Miami before securing their victory in Kansas City and traveling to Vancouver.
Switzerland midfielder Ardon Jashari acknowledged the challenge ahead. "They are a dynamic team that plays with aggressiveness.
It will be the most difficult match of this World Cup for us. We have to counteract that and play our style," Jashari said.
He added, "There is no favorite. South American teams are very emotional.
There could be provocations." Jashari has seen limited playing time in the tournament, appearing for just one minute against Qatar.
Switzerland winger Rubén Vargas also anticipated an intense atmosphere driven by the crowd in Canada. "There will be many Colombians in the stadium.
There may be some provocations. We have to be prepared for that.
Without a doubt, we are ready," Vargas said.
Vargas has been a key contributor for Switzerland, starting three of their four matches while recording two goals and an assist.
The winner of the upcoming match at BC Place will advance to the quarterfinals to face either Argentina or Egypt.
