Internal sources within WWE have downplayed widespread rumors regarding backstage heat involving CM Punk ahead of his highly anticipated return to Monday Night Raw in Chicago, Illinois.
Journalistic investigations by Fightful Select and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter revealed conflicting accounts of Punk's standing within the promotion following an extended television absence that dates back to April 20.
While initial reports suggested internal friction originating from his World Heavyweight Championship loss at WrestleMania 42, subsequent inquiries with WWE staff, creative team members, and known personal detractors yielded no confirmation of any ongoing issues.
Wrestling Observer Newsletter journalist Dave Meltzer previously noted that internal shifts altered early creative plans that featured Punk challenging Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at SummerSlam.
"The plan was Cody Rhodes defending the title against CM Punk. That absolutely was the plan," Meltzer stated.
The creative direction changed significantly after Sami Zayn captured the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions in June, modifying the trajectory toward the upcoming summer pay-per-view.
Fightful Select reporter Sean Ross Sapp extensively vetted the rumors by contacting numerous individuals within the company, including those who hold personal animosity toward Punk.
"We already have. We spoke on those rumors a couple weeks ago.
Those are the ones that he’s talking about. It’s just we’ve gotten nobody to confirm that.
Nobody on the creative team, nobody in WWE, nobody that even disliked him," Sapp said.
The lack of confirmation from internal critics heavily challenged the validity of the reported backstage tension, as multiple sources professed complete ignorance of the situation.
"I reached out to people that I knew disliked him to see if they even heard that hot goss.
They had not heard that," Sapp said.
The situation mirrored previous unverified claims regarding a potential pay cut, which were similarly dismissed by personnel across the promotion.
"Like, it was news to them when I brought it up. Like we approached the pay cut rumors, all that stuff.
Just nobody was buying it. So if it’s true, people in WWE just had not heard it.
It’s always possible. It’s true," Sapp said.
Despite the lack of verified friction, WWE management acknowledged that keeping Punk off television for this duration departed from their original scheduling format.
"I will say, usually CM Punk news gets out there pretty swiftly, but him being off this long was definitely not the plan," Sapp said.
The performer remained excluded from official promotional previews for the Allstate Arena event in Chicago, despite prior social media advertisements from the venue confirming his scheduled appearance.
