The Toronto Maple Leafs hired former Ottawa Senators captain and Hockey Hall of Famer Daniel Alfredsson as the team's new associate coach on Tuesday.
The club also appointed John Gruden and Brad Werenka as assistant coaches to finalize the staff under head coach Jim Hiller.
The Maple Leafs parted ways with assistant coaches Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde.
Alfredsson joins the division rivals after spending the past three seasons as an assistant coach and player development staffer for Ottawa, where he remains the franchise leader in goals, assists, and points.
"I'm incredibly excited to add Daniel, John and Brad to our coaching staff," said Maple Leafs Head Coach Jim Hiller.
Hiller noted that Gruden previously guided the AHL's Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup title, while Werenka provides a blend of NHL experience and analytics expertise.
"Daniel's experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves.
John has established himself as one of the top coaches in the American Hockey League and played an instrumental role in leading the Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season.
Brad brings a unique combination of NHL experience, player development and expertise in performance analytics. Together, they'll be outstanding additions to our team," Hiller said.
The hiring follows a storied history where Alfredsson served as the ultimate rival to Toronto during four intense postseason matchups in the Battle of Ontario between 2000 and 2004.
The move reunites Alfredsson with his former international teammate Mats Sundin, who currently serves as a senior advisor for the Maple Leafs organization.
"One of the first moves we made after taking over the franchise was bringing Daniel Alfredsson back into the fold as an assistant coach in December of 2023," said Senators owner Michael Andlauer.
Andlauer praised the former captain's dedication to the Ottawa community despite his transition to a direct competitive rival.
"I quickly learned that Alfie embodied all the characteristics of what it meant to be an Ottawa Senator," Andlauer said.
The Ottawa executive confirmed that the organization keeps its doors open for the franchise icon in the future.
"While I wish he wasn't joining an arch rival, Alfie is forever an Ottawa Senator and the door will always be open for his return.
He has done so much for our organization and community, and he has my full respect," Andlauer said.
